FAQ

Questions and answers

The programme

Is this an AR/VR course or an AI course?

Both, by design. The first six weeks put a working AR application on your phone and a VR scene in the simulator. From Week 7 the AI layer is added inside that application: PyTorch, camera geometry, real-time perception, custom detectors, on-device deployment and language-model agents. The employable core is applied computer vision and edge AI; XR is what makes it tangible and makes your portfolio distinctive.

How much time does it take each week?

About nine to ten hours: two hours of recorded lectures released on Monday, one 90-minute live class and one live laboratory at the weekend, and a graded build task of four to five hours. Every live session is recorded and released within 24 hours.

Is there a bootcamp or an entrance test?

No. You start on enrolment. A recorded foundations pack covers Python, Git, 3D mathematics and environment setup at your own pace. A short ungraded quiz in the first lab routes anyone who needs it to a foundations clinic in Weeks 1 to 3. Nobody is turned away by a test.

Who teaches the sessions?

IIT Bhubaneswar faculty own all AI, machine-learning, computer-vision and mathematics theory, live and recorded. Practising industry engineers own the AR/VR production material. Six partner startups each take one live class in the Startup Spotlight series. Teaching assistants run every laboratory, with one for every 25 participants.

What is the Startup Spotlight?

Every fourth week the live class is taken by a partner startup: a live demo of a shipped product, the architecture behind it, the market it sells into, the roles it hires for and what it tests for. Each startup also contributes project problem statements, names a mentor, sits on the Demo Day jury and joins a hiring panel in Week 22.

What is the final project?

From Week 4 you work in a team of three or four on a problem statement from one of three vertical tracks, industrial, heritage and tourism, or healthcare and education, or one proposed by a partner startup. The final six weeks are four supervised sprints with mentor reviews, ending at Demo Day at VARCoE, where the project is demonstrated to an industry jury.

Eligibility and hardware

Who can apply?

Second-, third- and fourth-year engineering students are the primary intake. The programme is open to diploma holders and working professionals as well.

Do I need to buy a VR headset?

No. No participant is required to purchase a headset. Meta Quest 3 headsets, a photogrammetry rig and GPU workstations are provided at VARCoE during the two immersions. Between immersions, VR work runs in the simulator on your laptop, and every milestone has a variant you can deploy to your own phone.

What hardware do I need?

A laptop with 16 GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU is strongly recommended. For learning, 8 GB of RAM with a dedicated GPU is enough. You also need an ARCore- or ARKit-compatible smartphone.

I am a working professional. Can I keep up?

The live class and lab run at weekends, everything is recorded, and the foundations clinic is open to everyone in the first three weeks. Immersion dates are fixed before enrolment so that leave can be planned.

Campus immersions

Are the campus immersions compulsory?

Yes. Both two-day blocks at VARCoE, IIT Bhubaneswar are mandatory. They are where the headsets, capture rig and GPU workstations are, where the industry code review clinics happen, and where the jury sits. A participant who misses either block cannot be certified in that cohort.

When are they?

Immersion 1 is held on the weekend after Week 12, the midpoint of the programme, and runs in batches on consecutive weekends. Immersion 2 is in Week 24 and includes Demo Day. Exact dates are reserved with VARCoE before enrolment opens and shared at seat confirmation.

Who pays for travel and accommodation?

Travel and accommodation for the immersion blocks are arranged and paid for by the participant. Subsidised hostel accommodation is under discussion with the Institute, and admissions will confirm before the first block.

Fees and certificate

What does the fee include?

Everything in the programme: the foundations pack and clinic, all live classes and the recorded library, campus lab access with headsets and GPU workstations during the immersions, the Startup Spotlight series and hiring panel, and mentor hours on your final project. Fees are exclusive of GST.

Are instalments available?

Yes. Instalment plans are arranged through admissions at seat confirmation. Talk to a counsellor for the current options.

Who issues the certificate?

The Certificate of Completion is issued jointly by the Research and Entrepreneurship Park and the Virtual and Augmented Reality Centre of Excellence, IIT Bhubaneswar. Exact wording and signing authority are being finalised with the Institute.

What does it take to be certified?

Seventy-five per cent attendance across live classes and labs, attendance at both immersions, a sixty per cent aggregate, all seven milestones published, and a final project accepted by the industry jury with the individual viva cleared.
